Urban Perspectives British and Swedish Art meet

27 Connaught Street , London W2 2AY

26th October to 6th November 2011

11am – 6pm Tuesday to Sunday

Thomas Zornat, 00:30 HOURS Oil on panel, 50 x 30 cm. For the first time in history over half the world’s population lives in the city. In our forthcoming exhibition two British and two Swedish artists present their vision of the increasingly blurred boundary between the urban and the rural.

Peter Ern´s paintings show us elements of 21st century life: soaring apartment blocks, subways and vast supermarkets yet we are reminded that the natural world, and trees in particular, remain, for the now at least, part of life in the metropolis. In contrast Thomas Zornat´s strikingly monochrome paintings are more direct; leading us straight to an encounter with nature, just at the edge of ‘civilization’, or confronting us with urban dwellings or dwellers.

Will Martyr’s playful paintings provide a fine contrast to those of Zornat. Both artists lean towards a photorealistic style: whilst Zornat paints each work in thick oils consisting of one base colour, Martyr selects a limited number of very punchy and vibrant acrylics for each work. This approach conveys a certain nostalgia for a timeless and simplified optimism, reminiscent of the post war modernism. Coupled with the painted titles we come to encounter an almost utopian place; urban yet natural.

Lucy Smallbone’s fluid painterly reality brings us back firmly into nature. Or do they?In the painted wilderness we encounter urban structures. The paintings move between depicting both an ideal and uninhabitable place. The landscapes seem as though they are in a state of flux.

Peter Ern and Thomas Zornat are well known in their native Sweden, with works in important museum collections. This is the first time their paintings will be exhibited in the UK. William Martyr (Slade BA, RCA MA) has been widely exhibited around the world, gained several awards such as the Catlin Commission prize in June 2011.

Lucy Smallbone graduated from City and Guilds Art School in 2010, gaining The Haworth Trust Award for Painting in the same year and is featured in the 2011 Catlin Guide.
