Daniel Bexfield is an asset to Burlington Arcade and the antiques trade which forms an important part of the British tourism and export trades. To see an arcade full of nothing but “designer” logo marketing-staurated merchandise would not attract me to Burlington Arcade even for a pair of braces. If England is a nation of shopkeepers then it needs the shopkeepers – not a conglomeration of multi-national shopkeeperless emporiums. .

Dear Elliot
I see the problem here is that the greater dominance of international luxury brand groups in Mayfair has been to increase rents to levels which ordinary art and antique retail businesses cannot easily sustain; the international fashion brands can afford to make losses on their flagship stores since they represent a form of marketing for their entire worldwide business; to have premises in Mayfair adds prestige to their brands. The smaller family businesses which make Mayfair more interesting and distinctive, an important draw for tourists, are being driven out of the area. Aside from one’s views on whether the proposals are in good taste and how to treat heritage buildings, glamourising the arcade in this way, whilst ostensibly attracting new customers, will almost certainly result in higher rents for some of the family antique businesses already there. Their future rent reviews will be based on the rents paid by the new branded fashion goods tenants that will have been enticed into the arcade.

Daniel Bexfield is an asset to Burlington Arcade as well as for London and England.
Indeed, refined antique dealers like Daniel Bexfield and high level fine art will always bring value not only to Burlington Arcade, but to London.
Daniel Bexfield thanks as a connaisseur will bring the best buyers and art collectors from France and Europe.
Beware of attracting only online shoppers that are just surfing on Internet out of boredom and never bringing anything good for the economy or for the international image of England.
Hoping my English is proper and my mail will reach the proper destination,

Dear Colleagues – in case you haven’t already done this…
Silver dealer Daniel Bexfield trades from Burligton Arcade – where individual shops thrive, providing discriminating British & overseas visitors with hand-picked, hand-made items of distinction. There is a planning application proposing to exclude art & antiques dealers from renting shops in the arcade, so that big brand names can take over. So Daniel needs our help!
He needs individual objections to the planning application, so please send an email to centralplanningteam@westminster.gov.uk
objecting to the applications ref: 11/08786/FULL, 11/08787/LBC, 11/08791/FULL, 11/08792/LBC, 11/08794/FULL, 11/08795/LBC .
You do not need to give a reason for your objection, but you need to give your name and address (anonymous comments will not be considered)
Objections must be received before Nov 8th. Thank you very much for your time.

Dear Member,
You might be aware by now that member, Daniel Bexfield has started a campaign to save the Burlington Arcade from the owners/developers. It is yet another threat on antiques centres in London.
Attached is a letter that he has sent out, some images of the proposed new look arcade and a further attachment explaining how you can help.
You can also read some of the press pieces that he has achieved so far on the Save Burlington Arcade web page:

Please offer your support by objecting to the planning proposals by the deadline of 8th November, it is very simple, see the attached document.

To Whom It may Concern
I Amanda E Shore, the President of Cambridge Art Gallery located in the USA, 212 S. 26th Street, Santa Monica CA 90402 completely object to these applications…
May I also add that history of such establishments such as ‘Daniel Bexfield Antiques’ is what makes such places like that of ‘Burlington Arcade’ unique and the many reasons why the public visits such places to begin with… One must not ignore the truth that tradition must be respected and such establishments such as ‘Daniel Bexfield Antiques’ are fine examples of makes England and such dwellings so beautiful….
What a ridiculous idea it is to evict such strong and fine businesses… you must be mad! What we must all do is to build upon traditions and create harmony while building upon them, making things better for everyone, one cannot possibly think that evicting great establishments is the right thing to do, it is a serious and sad mistake should this be accepted…
Yours Gracefully
Amanda E Shore
An American company which is inspired by the great English establishments such as Daniel Bexfield Antiques and one that you should be proud to have in such a fine city like that of London…. Burlington Arcade is a long time tradition of what makes London and Antique shopping so grand and exciting for not just the English but for those who visit from the States…

Done! Planning board has just heard my objection.
What gives the Burlington Arcade its character is the infinite variety of its tenants, from the specialist jewelry dealers to cashmere sweater sellers, the fountain pen dealer, to as-strong-as
advertised luggage dealers, even to delicious macaroons from Paris. What’s next? Evicting the
“Victorian” shoe shine boy?! Turning the entire arcade into a Whole Foods? An admission charge?
London’s Arcades are its treasures; don’t lose them to large chain stores. If I want to buy high end designer goods I will figure out where to do so. The charm of the Burlington Arcade is not only its small scale but the sometimes surprising mixture of tenants. Lose that and you have totally missed the point.

What is the council thinking!!!!, these places are the jewels to our city. An identity to our heritage, the reason we are visited by so many from all over the world,
It’s too easy to tear down; it’s taken years to build, established for fine English quality such as Daniel Bexfield. we have enough high street chain stores the Burlington arcade must keep its individual old English identity.
This is happening to often in London………………

I object to the proposed plans to brutalize Burlington Arcade.
It will be especially tragic if people like Danial Bexfield are forced out. The reason why Burlington Arcade is such a popular place with visitors to the capital is that it contains interesting shops like Daniel’s.
There are already too many cloned shopping streets containing famous brands like Rolex, Tiffany and Prada – and, let’s face it,. they are really only posh chains. If, in future these are all that will be in Burlington Arcade, the owners of these chains will probably eventually terminate their leases when, as it eventually must, the footfall drops.
Knightsbridge, Bond Street, Westfield are all monolithic and boring. London loses all its character if we force out the little, quirky bits. If you ask present visitors to Burlington Arcade why they are there, it’s pretty obvious that they will reply it gives them the chance to shop and at the same time enjoy a little bit of history and tradition.
I feel this particularly keenly because I trade in antiques in Portobello Road and I know that if all the antiques shops disappeared – and this is happening now – and are replaced by expensive clothes shops, coffee house chains and t-shirt vendors, then our enormous Saturday footfall will shrink. When this happens, not only does valuable tradition go out of the window, but you should be aware that ultimately rateable values start to fall too.

Dear All
The irony is we are encouraged to preserve our heritage and seek funding to do so. What the heck is all this about?? The Burlington Arcade is a significant landmark and part of our heritage it should be kept intact for all to see, its stunning. ‘HAND OFF’ our way of life I say – whatever happened to live and let live.
The people that think up these ideas need to get a life. They should stop and think – in the scheme of things I suspect they are tourists at least once a year and possibly more. Do they go aboard to visit a chain store we already have in the UK. If every city all over the world does the same – there will be no need to travel?
Hence no revenue – etc etc.

Dear Friends and Colleagues
Thank you all very much for utilising the Art, Antiques and Design blog, in order to
clarify your objections, in respect of the plans to evict the trade from the Burlington
Arcade in London.
It seems that much of the UK and International trade, together with many collectors
and parties interested in preserving this special part of London have pulled together,
in order to support one of the UK’s Antique dealers.
To date, nearly 10,000 objections have been raised with Westminster City Council, with
almost 5% via the AAD Blog.
It appears that your continuing help is already reaping dividends internationally.

Re: Objection to the proposed changes to Burlington Arcade
Dear Sir,
I am writing on behalf of the Members of LAPADA The Association of Art & Antiques Dealers, specifically those who currently occupy premises in Burlington Arcade, of whom there are several, to object to the proposals for its development.
One of them in particular, Daniel Bexfield, has been informed that he has to leave in 2013 when his lease expires, as it ‘no longer fits the look’ of the proposed redevelopment. We are concerned about Mr Bexfield’s situation in particular and the future of the Arcade in general.
Mr Bexfield runs a small but successful and reputable business as a silver dealer. He is highly respected in the trade and is a member of both our Association and the British Association of Antiques Dealers, where he serves on the Council. His is typical of the kind of business that is so characteristic of the art and antiques trade that attracts visitors to London, who seek not just the well-known glamourous global brands such as Chanel and Gucci, but also the small, unique shops with their charm, history and personal service. Evicting him and others like him will threaten their existence and put their livelihoods in jeopardy.
Considering Burlington Arcade as a whole, we are very concerned that the atmosphere and historic appeal of the Arcade will be ruined by the proposals. It will in effect be turned into just another anonymous, antiseptic ‘shopping mall’, with no atmosphere. It will feature another boring, bland selection of global brands, which can be found in any upmarket shopping street and indeed, close by in New Bond Street itself. If we turn central London in to the equivalent of a Singaporean shopping mall we lose our trump card as an international city.
On both counts therefore, we would urge the planning department to consider these proposals very carefully.
Yours sincerely

departments can do the strangest of things.
I received a letter today from Joanna Lumley saying that she too is
objecting to the Burlington Arcade planning applications.
Sincerely,
Daniel.
