Since 1994 Nicholas Bagshawe has worked as a sole trader in 18th, 19th and early 20th century fine art and has developed a series of lectures on subjects related to his area of expertise. The business is run from gallery premises in London’s St.James’s.
Established in 1872 by Albert Henry Baldwin, Baldwin’s has over 100 years experience in serving the numismatic world.
Although founded much earlier the name A.H. Baldwin & Sons didn’t become synonymous with the London numismatic scene until 1901 when Albert Henry set up his first London based premises on Duncannon Street with his eldest son Percy, joined later by his two other sons Fred (legendary cataloguer of King Farouk of Egypt’s coin collection) and Roy. In 1920 Baldwin’s became a limited company and moved to their premises on Adelphi Terrace, where we remain to this day.
The company moved to its present location at 11 Adelphi Terrace in 1971 and has since grown to become one of the premier numismatic firms with the largest stock of coins, medals, tokens and numismatic books in the UK. An antiques dealer since 1991, Italian-born Laura Bordignon began to specialise in Japanese art in 1997, becoming a member of the British Antique Dealers Association in 2000. J H Bourdon-Smith Ltd are a family firm established by John Bourdon-Smith whose first purchase of silver was an etui of c1815, for which he paid £4, in 1951. He has progressed from careering round the country on a second hand motorbike, moving to our current premises in Mason’s Yard in 1978. Antique canes, walking sticks and umbrellas have long been a passion of mine and I offer a large selection dating from 1650 to 1950. These are not perambulatory aids, but items of fashion, individuality, power, status and profession.
A cane was designed to be worn rather than used. It showed who you were and how you viewed yourself. Whether you sported a jewelled Fabergé cane or one of whalebone fashioned by a sailor on a long sea voyage, your cane made a powerful statement. Consequently, these items are intensely personal. Each cane is redolent with the history of bygone individuals and their times.
I established my business in 1972 and have had branches in London and Bath. I now sell from London antique fairs and my website.
Brian and Gillian Watson started dealing in 18th and 19th century drinking glasses and associated table glass in 1991 as a part-time activity. In 1993 Brian resigned his headship of a school in Norfolk to be a full-time dealer and Gill joined him in 1996.
