The 11th and 12th February sees Cape Town’s annual Antique fair that brings together 19 members and dealers from all over the country.  The South African Antique Dealers Association (SAADA) is the oldest association of antique dealers in the country and has a strict code of conduct that members need to adhere to.

SAADA holds two fairs annually with the Cape town fair being the first of the year.  We invite you to visit our fair preview page on our website www.saada.co.za,  a great way to whet your appetite by viewing some of the rare and interesting pieces that will be exhibited.

Look out especially for The Old Corkscrew’s pair of George III hallmarked silver travelling chamber candlesticks.  What makes these unusual is that the sconces, once, unscrewed, fit into the two halves which then screw together to form a circular box.  It is the rare and unusual pieces  that have made Jeremy Astfalck, from The Old Corkscrew an international success.

Burr and Muir, based in Cape Town city centre are specialists in Art Deco, Art Nouveau and 20th century design.  They concentrate on finding the best pieces possible, especially in the field of Lalique and Galle glass, as well as art deco sculpture.  This year they will exhibit a Demetre Chiparus bronze and ivory “Vested Dancer” standing over half a metre tall and clad in a tight detailed long-sleeved bodice, a full pleated skirt and a cloche cap, she is in a dancing pose.  “The quality of the bronze moulding is superb, especially in the intricate detailing on the vest and the complex fold of the skirt… The quality of the ivory carving too is unsurpassed” says Geoff Burr of Burr and Muir.

South Africa has seen a marked increase in interest in pieces of Chinese origin driven by the huge increase in Chinese buyers.  Ricus Dullaert of Kunsthandel H.W.C. Dullaert is a dealer based in both Johannesburg, South Africa and in the Netherlands and he has become a specialist in this field.  Among other things Ricus will exhibit is a set of 6 Chinese porcelain “famille rose” Qianlong plates (1736 – 1795).  These would have been transported from China to the Netherlands by the VOC in the 18th century.
