‘Save Burlington Arcade’ – AGAIN!
I am writing to ask for your help once more. The campaign to Save Burlington Arcade has been spurred back into action just a few months after our victory last year. The Arcade owners have now submitted fresh plans to Westminster City Planning Department to replace the existing floor with a brand new highly-polished black and beige quartzite tiled floor.
Hard shiny quartzite can already be seen in modern shopping malls (and bathrooms) the world over. I believe it would be completely out of character and wholly inappropriate and would doubtless lead to other major changes in the Arcade, which is not a Las Vegas or Dubai-style shopping mall.
When the original applications were submitted last year to ‘modernise’ the Arcade, celebrity protestors included Dame Judi Dench, Stephen Fry and Joanna Lumley along with other notable supporters such as Deputy London Mayor Kit Malthouse, Ken Livingstone, the Baroness Boothroyd, Rob Brydon, Alan Davies, Kelly Hoppen, Jay Rayner and Michael Winner. They all lined up alongside hundreds of ‘ordinary’ horrified Londoners and visitors alike, to make their feelings known.
The Arcade’s foreign owners (Joseph Sitt of Thor Equities & Mayer Bergman) dreamed up sweeping changes, with infamous American ‘architect’ Peter Marino, to oust small traders in favour of big-name fashion brands such as Prada, Gucci and Chanel with their infinitely deeper pockets.
Burlington Arcade is part of our heritage and must be preserved. If commercial owners do not appreciate what they are buying into when they invest into such unique properties, that is their problem – we should not let them vandalise our city just to make a quick buck.
The clock is ticking – and we only have until March 31st to lodge objections to their submitted planning application. Anyone who wishes to object must do so quickly – details of how to object can be found at my website:
http://www.bexfield.co.uk/11/saveba.htm
You can email objections directly to Westminster planning office at: centralplanningteam@westminster.gov.uk Quoting this reference number: 12/01433/LBC (copy & paste it): Stating that you “object to the application” (you do not have to give a reason, but better if you do) Anonymous comments will not be considered, so your name & address must be attached
Or you can write to: Westminster City Planning Department, Westminster City Hall, 64 Victoria Street, London, SW1E 6QP, quoting the reference no. 12/01433/LBC, along with your name and address, stating that you ‘object to the application’.
Thank you for your help !
Yours sincerely,
Daniel Bexfield.

I have observed that developers are the scum of the earth. Some years back now the wonderful Queen Victoria Building in Sydney almost went to the developers. Those who visit Sydney would say they are glad this did not happen.

Dear Fay,
That is exactly right. It’s these types of buildings, which give character to a city.
Do please encouage others to object to the plans.
Sincerely,
Daniel.

Dear Andres,
That is brilliant of you, thank you very much. Lets hope the Arcade is saved, so in years to come down, future generations will have the pleasure of looking at interesting windows down the Burlington Arcade (without having to worry about slipping on the marble floor).
Sincerely,
Daniel.

I have lodged a complaint via e-mail.
Is there not a preservation order on the Arcade?
Good Luck with the fight.

Hello Helen,
Thank you for objecting, this does make a difference.
The arcade is a grade 2 listed building, but that mainly covers the shop fronts and walls, but not the floor.
Though the floor is not original, it does not distracting to the character of the Arcade, whereas a new polished ‘shopping mall’ floor will totally be out of keeping with this Regency gem.
Daniel.

I would like to thank everyone that has contacted me, saying they have objected to the planning applications and they adore the Burlington Arcade, ‘Just The Way It Is’.
As many of you will know, I have been pushing out the message ‘to object’ by Twitter. The response has been amazing, but not just from the antiques trade, but from many celebrities as well. To give you an idea, how successful it’s been, so far: Jay Rayner (The Observer food critic & BBC One Show) retweeted my message to 43,000 followers; Kim Ismay (actress – Mamma Mia); Charlie Higson (author) 53,400 followers; Max Pemberton (Trust Me I’m A Doctor columnist for The Telegraph) 3,600; Annabel Giles (TV presenter) 5,800; Alan Davies (comedian) 363,700 and Rob Brydon 768,000 followers, all retweeted messages such as ‘STOP the developers from ruining #BurlingtonArcade, object to the NEW planning application http://bit.ly/zfvETO Please RT’.
I also received a great email from Wellington, New Zealand, from Stephen Fry, where he is filming, giving his ‘Utmost Support’.
Even though there has been great support for the campaign, we are not home and dry yet, so please do object (anyone from anywhere, is allowed to have a say) and encourage others to take a few moments to do so as well.
Wishing you all the best,
Daniel.

This is pure madness! They’ve already plundered good ol’ Portobello with all those sewing machines in the window! I can’t belive this very British institution is under threat…
…again!
